During the Gilded Age, economic boom is companioned by political corruption. The manifestation are in the Panics of 1893 and 1907. In the Progressive era, significant changes enacted at the national levels included the imposition of an income tax with the Sixteenth Amendment, direct election of Senators with the Seventeenth Amendment, Prohibition with the Eighteenth Amendment, and women's suffrage through the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Theodore Roosevelt, a republican but a progressive, championed many social changes, including immigration, blacks, etc. William Taft served one term. President Wilson uses tariff, currency, and anti-trust laws to prime the pump and get the economy working.
