Date event ended: 0000-00-00 Short summary Like the Palace of Versailles, the Winter Palace of St Petersburg is a national prestige of Russia. Peter I, who started the city of St Petersburg, built a winter palace as imperial residence. However, the modern day enlarged Winter Palace was built between 1753 (Elizabeth) and 1762 (Catherine II). Catherine II was married to Elizabeth nephew Peter III from Germany. The modern day Winter Palace was also not built on the site of Peter I winter palace. The Winter Palace is a show piece to demonstrate the westernization and artistic taste of Russia.
