The ancient Greeks are known to the first to experiment with direct democracy. Athens was a city-state in the ancient Greek world, surrounded by the likes of Sparta and Macedon. Solon (594 BC), Cleisthenes (508/7 BC), and Ephialtes (462 BC) all contributed to the development of Athenian democracy. Historians differ on which of them was responsible for which institution, and which of them most represented a truly democratic movement. The model, including direct voting (using stones) and assembly (congress) was used by many cultures and countries. The model, much like French revolution thousand years later, setup new policies and military landscapes. The Athenian democracy coincide with development in Rome and Persia.
