Milestone Name: The Treaty of Versailles,

Treaty of Versailles
Full name of milestone: The Treaty of Versailles
Type of milestone: War

1919-06-28
Milestone year: 1919
Description:
The Treaty of Versailles ended the World War I, by then called the "war to end all wars". During the world war I, nearly all young man in Europe were killed. The "Big Three" - France, Great Britain, and United States, each entered the negotiation with different agenda. France wished to forever get rid of Germany as a war risk, having suffered in the Franco-Prussian war (Bismarck) in 1870. The United States president, Wilson, asked the congress to enter the war in 1917 and turned the tide of the war. Wilson's single-minded insistence to create the "League of Nations" without military was puzzling to many. In the end, the Treaty fragmented Germany and Russia, created many modern day countries such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Finland, and Lithuania. It made German people very angry about being blamed for the war. It made the German economy very poor, setting the stage for Hitler's rise to power. It leaves Germany fragmented (though not fragmented enough for the taste of French public). In the end, even the leaders of the Big Three suffered domestic slights within their respective countries after the treaty settlement.
