Robert Norman, 1550 - 1600, United Kingdom, United Kingdom

An English astronomer, compass maker, and mariner, he discovered magnetic inclination. His work perhaps inspired fellow citizen like William Gilbert to study magnetism and electricity. In fact, he is only the "rediscoverer" of the magnetic dip (after George Hartmann of 1544). His experiment involves placing a magnetic needle on a cork which is then floated in mutually buoyant water.
