Thomas Newcomen, 1664 - 1729, England, England

He developed the Newcomen Engine, a first steam engine for producing real work. Although the Common Engine (as it is called then) is not very efficient, it survived for many decades, even after James Watt made improvements. Newcomen also was inspired by Thomas Savery and Denis Papin.
